I haven’t been doing much in the garden the last several weeks because we have had SO MUCH rain! While I a thankful for the much needed rain it does make for a muddy mess to work in. I am also thankful that I decided to put my tomatoes in buckets this year. Otherwise I think they may have been drown out with all the rain.
The picture above is of the wreath I have on my front door. I love to add pops of color to my front porch with different wreaths every month or two. I think this one will have to stay put for quite a bit longer then I usually keep them up. You see that tiny little nest at the very top? Yep, right at the top between the sticks. We have some birds who decided to nest right there.
They are so beautiful! I love it! This is not the first time this has happened to one of my wreaths. The last time it happened we had robins nesting. but this year I am not sure what kind of birds we have. I have seen them, but have no idea what they are. I can’t wait to see the babies birds once they hatch. It is always such a fun thing for the kids to observe.
I will make sure to get pictures and keep you updated on our baby birds.
We also have some beautiful, purple clematis blooming in the back yard.
I was shocked when I walked out into the garden this afternoon after being out of town for 5 days to see the tomatoes are already blooming! I only planted 2 plants this year, but they are already huge! I have been trying out some tomato food this year to see if we can get better results then last year. So far it appears to be working.
And now for some not so pretty pictures. It was hard to get a good shot of some of the plants coming up and make them look good. I hate that you can see all the weeds in my garden. At least I am keeping it real here. The picture above is of the single hill of green beans I planted this year. They did not produce at all last year so I decided to just try a small amount and see how it goes.
The zucchini was just a tiny plant when I left town. This is what happened in just 5 days!
I wasn’t able to get a great shot of the hens, but I thought I would add an update on them anyway. We lost a couple last month due to our dog thinking they are toys. He never meant to hurt them. He really was just playing with them, but unfortunately he got a little rough. Needless to say the 5 we have left have not been laying as well as they did all winter. They are a bit freaked out.
We did build a better fence for them and they stay penned up all the time now to keep them safe. Lately we have only been getting 1-3 eggs per day. This is a bit upsetting since we were used to getting 5-7 per day. I have been looking into getting another hen to add to our flock to help things out.
Hopefully my July update will have some actual produce to show you! I can’t wait!
