Have you ever finished up a container of EOS lip balm and wondered if there was a way to refill it so you could save money? I hate paying $4 every time one of my girls uses up a container of lip balm. My daughter and I decided there had to be a way to refill them. That is how we came up with this post for an easy DIY EOS tutorial that costs just pennies. If you have made any of your own body products before you will likely have what you need on hand.
Earlier this summer my oldest was acting like a typical 10 year old on summer vacation and complaining about being bored. I of course, acted like a typical mom with kids home for summer break and told her she could either clean or find something to do. She decided chores didn’t sound like too much fun so she decided she better find something to do pretty quick before I found something for her.
Her 3 year old brother had taken her favorite chapstick earlier in the morning and smeared it all over my night stand and lamp. Somehow she got the brilliant idea to look for a youtube video to see if she could refill it on her own. The girl is smart! I am not sure I would have thought of that. I told her she could go for it if she did it all on her own since I was busy with other things. She had to ask my advice a couple of times and for help with a sharp knife, but other then that she made this awesome pink tinted EOS all on her own!
This morning we decided to reproduce what she made in a simple tutorial so you can refill your own containers as well.
To start you will need to gather your ingredients. This recipe is so simple because it only contains 3 ingredients which you will likely have on hand if you make any of your own beauty products.
You will need coconut oil, beeswax and a tube of lipstick. If you don’t want to invest in a large quantity of beeswax most natural food stores sell it in small 2 oz bars for a couple of dollars.
You will also need an empty EOS container. To prepare the container you will need to take the lid off and separate the grate from the bottom portion. This was probably the hardest step. The grate took us a bit to figure out. Basically you take a knife and place it in the small space between the bottom portion of the tube and the grate itself. It should pop right out.
Once you have the 2 pieces separated you can clean them. If you can’t tell I skipped this step before taking the photos.
Next you will want to take a small glass jar and place it in a pot of water to create a double boiler.
Pour all your ingredients into the jar and melt.
You can choose to add a small amount of lipstick if you want yours to have a slight tint. If not leave it out. You could also add some essential oils such as peppermint or lemon if you wanted.
Let the oil and wax heat just until everything is melted.
Before you pour you need to take the grate you separated from the bottom of the tube and place it in the TOP half of the tube. If you put it back in the bottom it will not turn out correctly. Once you have the grate placed in the TOP half you can pour your melted lip balm directly over the grate. Fill it slightly more then you think you need because as the lip balm settles it will cave in slightly.
Hopefully you do a better job filling yours then I did. As you can see I made quite the mess.
I typically place mine into the freezer at this point because I am not patient enough to let it set up on the counter. Once everything is completely cool snap the BOTTOM half of the tube back onto the grate. You should be able to twist at this point and the top should come off leaving the desired egg shaped lip balm.
There you have it! An easy DIY EOS tutorial.
